CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Exactly 70 years ago, the 1951 Gator Bowl was played in Jacksonville Florida between the Wyoming Cowboys, the champs of the conference known as the Skyline Conference, and the Washington and Lee Generals, winners of the Southern Conference.

The game was tightly contested through 1 quarter and then it was the Pokes Eddie Tallboom throwing an old school dime to Dick Campbell for the touchdown.

Wyoming would dominate the game going up 20-7 IN THE FINAL.

This win was the Cowboys first in the university’s history. As the Pokes would streak for 3 more bowl victories before losing in 1968.

Fast Forward to present day the Wyoming Cowboys under Coach Bohl are on another streak of consecutive bowl eligible seasons. The Washington and Lee Generals would never play in a major Bowl again, and today play in a Division III conference.
