Addition to Pine Bluffs Veterans Memorial to be dedicated in May
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Larry Silvey has been a Cheyenne resident for 20 years. A few years ago he purchased a couple lots in downtown Pine Bluffs, but wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with them.
“Each two or three months they’d send me a letter that the weeds were growing up in the empty lots.”
While Silvey was visiting another small town, he noticed there was a lot of veterans memorabilia around, he thought it would be pretty neat to do something like that in his lots. He was then encouraged to reach out to Cheyenne LEADS and see if local organizations would provide a grant to make it all possible.
“They said sure, if it’ll help enhance the city or unify the city and have some economic value, and I said sure it’ll bring some business into town.”
In 2016 the Pine Bluffs Veterans Memorial and Community Plaza was dedicated and sits in the heart of downtown. Though the memorial and mural have been in town for years, a new mural was finished in the fall of 2020, it is dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. Military that gave the ultimate sacrifice.
“I got this notion that there was still something missing, and that was the sacrifice of military people that made America beautiful.”
Due to weather and the pandemic, Silvey wanted to wait to have a dedication ceremony. He was also able to raise the money for the new mural without the help of a grant this time. He said the amount of support that has made everything possible, has meant the world to him.
“People have just gone out of their way to be cooperative and give us some things we wouldn’t have otherwise. So I’m really pleased with their support of the military, not only for beautification of the town but the pride in our military.”
Silvey is excited to be able to share the newest addition to the memorial with veterans, active duty members of the military and Wyomingites everywhere. He has quite a ceremony planned with guest speakers and much more to dedicate the mural. It will begin at 9:30 am on May 14 and go until 11:30 a.m.. The mural is finished at this time and if you would like to swing by, it’s located on Main Street in downtown Pine Bluffs.
