Wyoming Medical Center celebrates volunteers contributing 20 years of service
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Two dedicated volunteers have dedicated 11,794 hours of service in different Wyoming Medical Center volunteer departments. Volunteers can spend their time in the gift shop, delivering books to patients, showing them around the hospital and more.
Jack Laird, a man who has volunteered for 20 years, said he has spent a lot of time taking a cart with books and activities for patients. “I’m the chairman of that now and that’s how I started. I transferred to the information desk which I did for many years. I have also helped with escorting from time to time,” Laird said.
The kind people at WMC have kept him here this long. “It’s really benefitted me because I’m kind of an introvert and having interaction with different people from all over has helped me a lot,” Laird said.
Lisa Johnson, the volunteer coordinator, said they have lots of programs and things for volunteers. John Hilde, another 20-year volunteer, said he loves the mended hearts program. “Generally we go into the room and visit with them. We don’t do much visiting we do a ton of listening,” Hilde said.
Others in this program helped him with his recovery. “I had an eight bypass surgery and 17 years ago. There was a mended heart patient there and that helped me get to where I am today,” Hilde said.
The total number of hours from Laird and Hilde is 11,794.
