ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office says former Wyoming state senator John Hastert, 62, was arrested Thursday, April 29th during an operation to find and stop potential sexual predators and human traffickers.

Deputies were taking part in training to be able to spot and stop predators and traffickers. The training ended with a live operation, including deputies and or detectives going undercover and using online tools to catch potential criminals. During the operation, Hastert was among four people who were caught in the act of solicitation. When Hastert was confronted by deputies, he allegedly started an altercation with a deputy. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Officer Public Information Officer, Deputy Jason Mower, said it took multiple deputies to bring Hastert into custody.

Hastert was booked on charges of soliciting an act of prostitution and interference with a peace officer. Both are considered misdemeanor charges.

Hastert served as a democrat in the Wyoming state legislature from 2003 to 2018, starting in the House and moving on to the Senate. Most recently, from 2017-2018, Hastert served Senate District 13 and was the Senate Minority Whip.
