Kelly Walsh track athlete signs letter of intent to the University of Wyoming
Darius Wiggins knew he wanted to follow his father’s footsteps to the University of Wyoming, and on Thursday afternoon, he made that a reality.
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Kelly Walsh High School’s Darius Wiggins won the 400 at the State Indoor Championships in February and has set some unofficial state records during his time in Casper, and he won’t be taking his talents out of state.
Wiggins will keep competing in Wyoming for the University of Wyoming track team. He signed his letter of intent on Thursday afternoon in front of a standing-room-only crowd inside the Kelly Walsh team room.
He will also be a member of the Western Thunder, UW’s marching band.
Wiggins said he knew he wanted to go to the University of Wyoming because his father went there. “I just want to follow in his footsteps,” said Wiggins before his dad leaned over and gave him a hug.
When asked what he was most excited to do when he got to Laramie, Wiggins emphatically said, “to run track.”
He also said, “Just being at that place (Laramie), it’s really like heaven to me.”
Wiggins will join former Kelly Walsh athletes Sage Coventry, Caige McComb and Maddy Dedic on the Cowboys’ track team.
