Regional champions crowned in 4A soccer
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The 4A regionals came to a close on Saturday afternoon with the west regionals taking place in Evanston, and the east regionals concluded in the other corner of the state in Gillette.
The results of Saturday’s action would help determine the seeding for next weekend’s state tournament in Cheyenne.
In Gillette, Cheyenne’s teams remaining included the Cheyenne East boys and girls and the Central girls.
The Central girls were playing for a regional championship after knocking Sheridan 1-0 on Friday. They met Thunder Basin High School at Campbell County High School, but Thunder Basin was able to defend their hometown and brought home a regional championship with a final of 2-1.
Meanwhile, the East boys and girls found similar fates in their 3rd place games. The girls fell to Sheridan 1-0, and the boys weren’t able to get enough going against Laramie and lost 2-1.
On the other end of the state, Kelly Walsh’s boys and girls were vying for regional championships in Evanston in the 4A West Regional.
The Kelly Walsh boys had a bye heading into the regional tournament, and they were able to use that wisely. They met Jackson in the championship, and it took overtime and a shootout.
The Trojans were able to prevail 2-1 though.
Kelly Walsh’s girls did not have the same fortune. They met Rock Springs in the championship game and were downed 5-1.
The Natrona County girls played Jackson in the third-place game, and they were unsuccessful falling 5-2.
Despite some of the setbacks, all of Saturday’s participants will be moving on to the capital city to compete in the state championships next weekend.
