CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Sam Shumway, with AARP Wyoming, joined Grace Foulk on Thursday morning to talk about recognizing those who care for veterans during Military Appreciation Month.

With over 5 million AARP members being our nation’s veterans, we wanted to find a better way to connect. This led to AARP’s Veterans, Military, and Family Initiative. is a free website that seeks to get information to veterans as quickly and easily as possible.

AARP is working with organizations; Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation

  • This partnership allows for family caregivers to access no-cost, short-term assistance for those caring for wounded, ill, or injured veterans or service members at home

A big focus for AARP during the pandemic is getting information to Veterans quickly and in a digestible way

  • How to get COVID testing and where to access the vaccine
  • How to obtain official service records
  • Getting breaking news and relevant information

AARP’s Veterans work centers around three main topics

  • Jobs and employment
  • Caregiving
  • Fraud prevention

Military Caregiving Guide

  • How to talk out medical or emotional needs
  • Creating a system of support
  • Making a plan to respond to specific needs
  • Seeking professional support
  • Reminding caregivers to care for themselves

Veteran work in Wyoming

  • 51,000 military veterans live in Wyoming, 68% being over age 50
  • Veteran events across the state
  • Sheridan Golf Tournament in 2019
    • Sheridan VA participants
    • AARP WY Sheridan Action Team donated 10 full sets of golf clubs
  • Semi-pro hockey game
    • 15 Veterans were able to attend
  • Partnered with Sheridan VFW to provide meals to veterans during the 2020 Veterans Day and Thanksgiving holidays
