Casper Oilers looking forward to Senior Night Thursday afternoon
The Casper Oilers have used their senior presence to find victories and fun this summer, and the excitement surrounding the team continues heading into Senior Night on Thursday.
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - On Tuesday, the Casper Oilers took care of business during a doubleheader against Rock Springs at Mike Lansing Field. The Oilers took both games in dominant fashion, including a combined no-hitter in the second contest.
It brought the heavily senior-laden team one night closer to Senior Night on Thursday.
“It’s really been dawning on most of us that today we have 15 games left in the season,” said Senior Oiler Morgan Picket. “And I think for most of us it’s really, ‘Wow... we have 15 games. We gotta make every single one of them count, make every at-bat count, just play our hearts out and have fun.’”
Pickett played a key role in both of Tuesday’s contests. He contributed solid innings on the mound in the first game and had a double and triple to go along with pair of RBI’s in the second matchup.
He’s also one of 11 seniors on this summer’s Oilers roster. Casper Baseball Club Coach Tannar Galey said this group of seniors aren’t just great athletes to be around.
“They’re great kids, and they just make it a joy to show up to the ballpark,” said Galey after Tuesday’s wins over Rock Springs.
The team will honor the seniors Thursday against Alliance (NE) with Senior Night.
“It’s definitely a little bit of an emotional night because you get to honor those guys and honor their accomplishments and give them one last hurrah on the field,” said Galey. “That’s always a special night as a coach because you get to kind of relish in what they’ve accomplished as athletes.”
Pickett said this group of seniors is very close. They spend time together off the field hanging out, fishing and getting to know one another’s families.
It helps that most of the group has been playing together since they were around 9 years old. “We’ve all grown up with each other,” as Pickett put it.
With Senior Night on the horizon, Pickett said, “Hopefully we can get a big crowd to turn out and get the stands all loud and everyone all fired up and ready to go.”
First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M. at Mike Lansing Field on Thursday.
