CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - When it was all said and done this week’s Prep Team of the Week was one of the very best legion baseball squads in Cheyenne history. The 2021 Cheyenne Post 6 Sixers won a program-record 69 games en route to a (69-19-1) record, a Wyoming Legion State Championship, and an American Legion Northwest Tournament berth.

But though the season ended up looking fantastic, it started in a rocky fashion, with the Sixers blowing a 6-0 6th inning lead and losing 7-6 on Opening Day.

“It’s the first Post 6 team that I can think of or remember that lost their first game of the season, and so to start (0-1), there was adversity for this group right away and they were able to bounce back immediately that first weekend against some really good competition,” said Sixers Manager Ty Lain.

The team definitely bounced back, losing just one more game in April and going on its ultimate run, which included a victory in its first game of the American Legion Northwest Regional Tournament. Naturally, with this success, the expectation level has been raised for future squads.

“I think the bar is and will be moving forward, let’s get a Wyoming team to the World Series and I think this is a group that’s very capable of accomplishing that,” said Lain.

If all eligible players return in 2022, the Sixers will lose just three players from this year’s squad. No Wyoming team has ever been one of the 8 teams in the American Legion ‘AA’ World Series.

Congratulations to the 2021 Cheyenne Post 6 Sixers, Wyoming News Now Prep Team of the Week.
