CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - A professional golfer by way of Cheyenne Central High School and the University of Central Oklahoma, Josh Creel snagged his first career Korn Ferry Tour victory this weekend at the Utah Championship.

The KFT is a developmental professional golf tour in which the top 25 golfers qualify for the PGA tour after the regular season. Creel got closer to making the cut with this win.

“We’re as close as we’ve been and [I’m] playing good golf, [my] body feels good [and] mentally I’m in a good spot,” said Creel. “So yeah, we’re going to go peg it on Thursday and see where the chips fall.”

Creel, who rose as high as No. 30 in 2019, now sits at No. 32 on the KFT leaderboard. There is just one regular-season KFT tournament left in 2021, which starts on Thursday and takes place in Omaha, Neb.

Creel has come a long way since his days as a four-time Wyoming team state champion at Central, and he said he’s honored to call the Cowboy State home.

“When I first got out here, they’d announce Cheyenne, Wyoming and people would be like, ’What? How is this guy out here playing from Cheyenne, Wyoming,’” said Creel. “So it’s fun and [I’m] just proud to be from Wyoming, that’s for sure.”

Creel said he would likely need to finish in the top 5 and get some help in Omaha this week to crack the top 25. However, even if he does not, 25 more PGA Tour cards will be available in the upcoming Korn Ferry Tour playoffs.
