State tennis tournament begins in Gillette

GILLETTE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Tennis athletes from across Wyoming are converged in the northeast corner of the state to vie for a state championship. The first round of matches began Thursday, and champions will be crowned on Saturday.

Matches are spread across Gillette at Thunder Basin and Campbell County High Schools. Other matches are also being held at Bicentennial Park and Gillette’s Indoor Facility.

Individuals played up to two matches on Thursday, and the semifinal matches will begin Friday.

There were quite a few semifinalists from Casper and Cheyenne high schools.

South’s Andrew Lock and Kelly Walsh’s Austin Putnam will square off in boys’ #1 singles for a spot in the championship match. Putnam is the defending state champion at boys #1 singles.

Jackson Catchpole, another Kelly Walsh defending state champion at #2 boys singles, will take on Paulo Mellizo in the boys #2 singles semifinals. On the other side of that bracket, South’s Nikolas Lock awaits Hayden Clark from Jackson.

Kelly Walsh’s #1 doubles team, Phillips - Rasmussen, and #2 doubles team, Yakel - Putnam, will also play in the semifinals. Central’s Villalobos-Alvarado - Ellison are in the #3 doubles semifinals.

On the girls’ side, Central’s Ashli Smedley and Natrona County’s Theresa Trvajova will square off in the #1 singles semifinals. Kelly Walsh’s Finley Klinger is on the other side of the bracket, and Fellow Trojan Gabriella Blumberg is in the #2 singles semifinals.

East’s O’Brien - Kastens and Kelly Walsh’s Strand - Nokes are on opposite sides of the girls’ #1 doubles bracket. Their #2 doubles pairings, Klinger - Catchpole and Baktamarian - Murphy, will also play in the semifinals. Central’s Tempel - Tyler will take on the Trojans duo.

Two doubles pairs from Casper will play in the #3 doubles semifinals. Kelly Walsh’s Collins - Wilson and Natrona County’s Colling - Warelin are on opposite sides of the bracket.

Kelly Walsh boys (13.5 points) and girls (17 points) are atop the team score leaderboards after Thursday. The South boys sit in fifth (9 points), and the Central girls (9.5 points) and Natrona County girls (9 points) are also in the top five.
