CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - As we continue Hispanic heritage month, we look at a local teacher who is making a difference.

“We thought this is something that our girls definitely need to get exposure to. Now that I’m here at East (HighSchool) we’ve been able to grow the program even more and get more girls from every school to attend,” said Jennifer Ponce, Teacher for LCSD1 and School Coordinator for Wyoming Latina Youth Conference.

Jennifer Ponce is a math teacher at East High School and a Wyoming Latina Youth Conference school coordinator.

During this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month, she has been teaching her students lessons in leadership.

Laramie County School District One is helping to pay for some students’ registration fees and Ponce has organized a fund-raiser for lodging for the conference.

The 21st Wyoming Latina Youth Conference will be at the University of Wyoming. This years’ theme is Education and Entrepreneurship.

The event is two days of workshops about social entrepreneurship, stem, wellness, and students from Grades 5 through 12 can attend.

The conference started at Laramie County Community College with Anne Redman and later moved to the University of Wyoming, now run by Cecilia Aragon.

“It’s just a really powerful conference, where everybody kind of walks away with this energy and feeling like they can really accomplish anything. That’s something I really want, to inspire our students. That they can do anything they put their minds to,” said Ponce.
