CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - This week is National Veterinary Technician Week.

Working as a vet tech means your days are never the same. Some days may be slower, while other days you may be helping on multiple emergencies.

“We do everything to help the doctor. We’re basically like their nurse. So, we’re doing everything with getting the patient in their room doing all their vitals, and just doing anything to assist the doctors,” said Samantha Patterson, a veterinary technician for Casper Animal Medical Center.

Veterinary technicians are trained to complete a wide variety of tasks to keep a veterinary hospital running. They may start off a patient’s visit by performing a basic physical exam. Then, when the veterinarian comes in to perform an assessment, the vet tech is there holding your animal and reassuring them. Behind the scenes they may draw blood, collect urine, or help evaluate samples.

“I’ve always wanted to be in this field. Then as I grew older, I realized it was a technician I wanted to do because we do more with dealing with the patients. So, it was more of the patient care that I wanted,” said Patterson.
