Running game becomes comes into focus for UW ahead of game vs Air Force
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The pokes have now rebounded from an opening loss, with their record now sitting at 2-1, but this week offers a unique challenge. Their week is reduced down as they prepare for a game on Friday.
“Now our clock turns to Friday night, getting ready for Air Force. I think they’re... I don’t vote on the Coaches Poll this year, but if I were voting, I certainly would place them fairly high. I know they’re sitting right outside the top 25, I think they’re a deserving team to be rated,” said Head Coach Craig Bohl when speaking on Wyoming’s upcoming opponent.
On top of trying to get back to full health and preparing for a new opponent with one less day, the Air Force Falcons offer a challenge unlike any other on offense.
Last week against Colorado, they had just five pass attempts, but managed 435 yards on the ground. They average 508.5 rushing yards per game, leading the FBS by 206.5 yards per game.
Their defense is also yet to allow over 60 yards to a single running back this season, and will come in to the game 52nd in the country in rush yards allowed per game. They’re 29th in the country in allowed passing yards per game, as well.
Wyoming’s defense has been solid against the run game to this point, allowing 111.3 yards a game, making them 49th in the country for that category.
The ground game will likely be a focal point for both sides of the ball.
“Obviously it’s a lot different too. It’s not like they just run the ball, it’s the whole option deal you gotta prepare for. It’s a lot of tape watching and a lot of new fits, but you know we’ve ran it since we’ve been here and we’re definitely looking forward to the challenge. They like to run the ball and we wanna be Cowboys Tough and play physical defense, so it’ll be exciting,” mentioned LB Easton Gibbs.
“It feels like a normal day at work. We look at them and we see them just as the fly boys. We’re coming in there and we’re gonna take what’s ours,” Titus Swen said when asked about Air Force’s run defense.
That game will be at War Memorial Stadium, with kickoff set for 6 PM.
