CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Several local swim teams convened last week for the Laramie Holiday Invite, but Lander’s Benny Kulow stood out above the rest of the field. He went up a class against some 4A competition, and was motivated to put on one of his best performances.

“Whenever we go to a big 4A school it’s always a big deal. It’s a big meet, we’re all working hard, so it’s just like a totally different mental game when you go to a bigger meet like that. But the coaches, like we get a hard workout and we’re ready, and we feel like we can just go get it,” Kulow said.

He won two individual events in the meet to help power the Tigers to a second place finish overall. In the 50 yard freestyle Kulow won comfortably, posting a time of 22.76, and in the 100 free he won with a 50.33.

Along with his two individual victories, he was also a part of Lander’s first place 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays to bring his event wins total to four.

Kulow said having a consistent prep routine before his events is key to his success.

“For 10-15 minutes before my race, I like to really get in the zone and like [listen to] music, try not to talk to anyone, and really focus. But then maybe five minutes before the race, then I’ll take it off, be with the team, be with the people that support me to kind of get that extra social boost. Because the music gives me the intrinsic motivation, and the people the extrinsic. That’s kind of like my goal [to get both], and then just try to make it last through the race,” Kulow said.

Congratulations to Benny Kulow on an impressive performance.
