Riverton boys upset Central, Laramie girls stay undefeated, and Kelly Walsh girls lose to Sheridan in Day 1 of the James Johnson Winter Classic

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The first varsity game of the James Johnson Winter Classic started the tournament with a bang. Riverton’s boys basketball team rallied from a double digit halftime deficit to beat 4A’s second ranked Central 63-58. That was the Indians’ first loss of the season in their first game without sophomore Chase Talich, who suffered a season-ending injury. The team did respond though in their second game with a 61-44 win over Bear Creek (CO).

The Lady Trojans needed the new year to help turn the tide of their season, as they entered this tournament sitting at 1-5. The opposing Lady Broncs though have had an admirable start with a 4-2 record thus far, and they took advantage of the struggling Kelly Walsh team. Sheridan left with a 41-31 victory in their opening contest of the tournament.

One of the most dangerous teams in the state at the moment is Laramie’s girls team; they had a perfect 7-0 record heading into Thursday. Green River gave the third ranked Lady Plainsmen everything they had in a back and forth battle, but ultimately Laramie was able to pull away in the second half to win 50-43. Thanks to Laramie, East, and Central’s girls teams all winning Thursday, the 4A Southeast quadrant continues to boast three undefeated teams.
