CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Imagine running a $1+ trillion industry with the technology of 1970. That’s the reality for truckers in 2023.

In a time when robots and artificial intelligence are growing closer to running the world, those running the trucking business are still conducting business using faxes, pen and paper, and landlines. If their outdated technology wasn’t bad enough, brokers serving as middlemen between truckers and businesses often charge astronomically high commissions.

A large part of the problem is that most trucking companies are small businesses and don’t have the capability to contract and negotiate with businesses on a large scale.

“97% of this industry is small and independent,” Lane Axis CEO & Founder, Rick Burnett said. “So you have a million and a half trucking companies that haul the freight, how do they contract, how do they negotiate directly [with businesses]? That’s what Lane Axis is doing. Building the direct network and allowing them to go directly to those businesses.”

Lane Axis removes any middle man and connects businesses directly with truckers through the use of a mobile app. The app then provides transparency on trucker location, driver performance, pickup and drop off times, and provides payment among other things.

All of this was virtually impossible before Lane Axis.

Drivers would often find themselves coasting for thousands of miles with empty loads, they wouldn’t know when, or if, they’d get paid, and companies struggled to locate their truckers.

Until recently, the service Lane Axis provided wasn’t even realistic. Most companies were using pen and paper to track business and didn’t even have smartphones.

“When I started in 2015, the 97% used paper logs and less than 1% of them had a smartphone,” Burnett said.

With the sheer volume of business available, an efficient system is worth a radical change.

“There’s a million and a half loads a day that are on load boards. What we’re doing for the smaller independents is helping them change their mindset where, if they build direct connections and direct relationships, now they have visibility to all these manufacturers.”
