CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - While the high school volleyball season has been over for awhile now, the Gatorade Players of the Year for volleyball were announced just a few days ago.

The selection for the state of Wyoming went to Laramie’s junior setter Maddy Stucky. She said it was a surreal feeling when she heard the news.

“I was super excited when I heard it was announced. I woke up at six, and my dad comes into my room and he kind of was messing with me. He’s like ‘I’m sorry, this sucks, it’s ok’, and then he shows me his phone and that I got it and it was like the best feeling ever,” Stucky said.

Stucky was a force to be reckoned with all year for the powerhouse Lady Plainsmen; she led the team with 892 assists and a .344 hit percentage, was second with 261 digs and 61 total blocks, third with 37 aces, and fourth with 143 kills.

Even more impressive is that she’s been putting up that sort of elite production since her freshman year. Stucky has earned three straight all state nods, and back in August she verbally committed to stay home and play for the Wyoming Cowgirls.

This is the third year in a row a Stucky has earned this honor, as Maddy’s older sister and current Florida Gator Alexis Stucky won it each of the two previous years. Maddy said that being able to keep it in the family was very special for her.

“You know, I think it’s really cool that it kind of stayed in the household. And I mean the Stucky name lives on for the last, what, three years? I think that’s super awesome. It just kind of shows the dedication we have as a family, and how much we put into volleyball as a whole,” Stucky said.

Congratulations to Maddy Stucky on earning the honor.
