Trio Earns All-Mountain West Honors
Fertig and Weidemann on All-Mountain West Team – Pedersen Freshman of the Year
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Press Release) - A trio of Wyoming Cowgirls took home All-Mountain West honors, announced Sunday by the league office. Allyson Fertig, Quinn Weidemann and Malene Pedersen all earned recognition.
Fertig and Weidemann were both named to the All-Mountain West Team for the first time in their careers while Weidemann was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team for the third time in her illustrious career. Pedersen, meanwhile, was Wyoming’s second consecutive student-athlete to be named Mountain West Freshman of the Year (Fertig, 2022) and was also selected to the All-Freshman Team. It marks the first time since 2018-19 (Bailee Cotton and Marta Gomez) that two Cowgirls were named to the all-league team.
Fertig finished third in the league in scoring this season during conference play with 15.7 points per game. She led the league with a 63.4-percent field goal percentage, was fourth in rebounding at 8.1 a contest and finished second averaging 2.1 blocks per game. Fertig scored in double figures 14 times in MW play this season and had six contests with 20-or-more scored, including four-straight and 5-of-6 to end the year. Fertig also tallied four double-doubles in league action.
Weidemann was tied, along with Pedersen for 14th in the conference in scoring at 11.4 points per game while leading the Cowgirls and finishing eighth in the Mountain West by making 1.4 3-pointers per game. Weidemann shot over 35-percent from beyond-the-arc in 2022-23 and had 10 games where she scored in double figures. Weidemann became the first Cowgirl and just the second in league history to be named to the defensive team three times or more. Weidemann helped lead the third-ranked scoring defense in the league (61.8 PPG) this past season and was the primary defender while holding seven of the league’s top-15 scorers and five of the top-nine below their season-scoring average against the Cowgirls this season.
Pedersen, meanwhile, led all Mountain West freshmen in scoring and assists. Pedersen was 14th in the conference averaging 11.4 points per game and was 10th in the league averaging 2.6 assists per contest. Pedersen shot 49-percent from the floor and 91.5-percent from the free-throw line in Mountain West contests. Pedersen, who was named the league’s Freshman of the Week five times this season, had 12 games where she scored 10-or-more points.
The trio and the rest of the second-seeded Cowgirls open Mountain West Tournament action Monday at 6 p.m., Mountain Time against the winner of Sunday night’s Air Force and San Jose State game.
